How To Build A Stylish Capsule Wardrobe
Everyone has had one of those mornings. You open up your closet, it’s full of clothes, but nothing seems right. The more the clock ticks on, the worse it seems to get, and you don’t feel like you’ll ever pick out the right outfit for work or college. How can you avoid having another one of those un-stylish days? you’ve probably heard of the capsule wardrobe, so here’s a guide to building your perfect, easy-to-style closet.
Good basics
The main idea behind a capsule wardrobe is that you have some good quality, basic clothes that you can mix and match as the season goes on. Whether you’re re-organising your clothes because you’ve got a new job, or are looking for a back to school wardrobe, getting the basics right will make things much easier. For your bottom half, you should have some jeans that make you feel amazing, some well-tailored trousers in a neutral colour, and a skirt that will go with anything. These are the pieces that it’s important to get right, as they can then be dressed up and down depending on the occasion. For the top, go for some t-shirts and vests in colours and patterns that you can mix and match, plus a couple of light cardigans, jumpers or long-sleeve tops. Investing in these items will ensure you have a good foundation for your outfit, and from there you can add some more personal touches.
Keeping warm
A blazer or other tailored jacket is great for outerwear, as it transforms any outfit into a smart business-like look. Depending on the climate where you live, you might also need something warmer for the winter, such as a belted wool coat or a fur jacket. Because jackets and coats are worn so often, you should take the time to find one that suits your shape. It might also be worth investing more in a coat, as most people keep them for at least a couple of years and it’s the kind of thing that gets noticed.
Summer time
In warmer weather, getting dressed is usually easier. Floral sundresses never really go out of fashion, and they can be easily dressed up or down. Pick some tailored, smart shorts that can be easily matched with vest tops or t-shirts. A floral tunic is also handy for this time of year, as it can be thrown on with some leggings on a warm day, so you can stay covered but cool. You can even layer these kinds of tops when it gets colder, meaning it’s a year round investment.
Going out
Nothing is more important or well-worn in a woman’s wardrobe that the little black dress. Pick one that flatters your shape, can be dressed a variety of ways and is of a good quality. This will last you a lot longer than buying cheaper dresses that are only in fashion for one season. You can add pieces to your dress to make it more suitable to the occasion, such as a beaded shrug, silk scarf or colourful heels.
Shoes and bags
When it comes to shoes, the most important, and most worn items in your wardrobe will be a pair of low, neutral coloured heels that you can walk in all day, and a pair of cute ballet flats. You’ll also need some cosy boots for winter. Once you’ve got these sorted, then you can experiment with a few pairs of colourful shoes, perhaps some higher heels or some fun patterns to mix and match with your wardrobe. Never buy shoes that pinch your toes, are too high or are some wacky design. You’ll never wear them, and they’ll clutter up your wardrobe until you decide to throw them out. Bags are pretty simple. You’ll need an oversized leather bag for university, work or everyday life and probably a clutch or two for nights out.
Accessories
The finishing touch to your outfit is what really makes it stand out. Invest in some interesting jewellery such as a large statement necklace, a chunky cuff bracelet or some big earrings. This will make your outfit look well-styled and put together. Adding a leather belt also gives a tailored, neat appearance to your outfit, and can help accentuate your waist, giving you a great figure.
Whatever you decide to put in your capsule wardrobe, be sure that it’s well made, fits you perfectly and makes you feel fabulous. De-cluttering can really help you to focus on clothes that are more suitable for you, and make your mornings a lot easier.
